Good dogs!

Are you going to be writing about the Francistown Gardening Club? That'd be super-interesting. I love Botswana, I once wrote to Pres Ian Khama and he wrote back!

Happy rains (and pula),

Hi Carolize,
The speckled ones are Koekoeks, which is a South African breed and the black, Australorps - an Aussie breed. The chickens and dogs are getting along famously. The hens slipped out of their run after a week and the dogs just followed them around, but didn't eat them! I don't know if I would trust them to be out when I am not around though . . .

Dear Jane,

when I read 'chicken tractor' I was hoping to see some chooks harnassed to a plough. I still hope to see that.

Are these Venda chickens?

It reminds me of another account I've read of a chicken coop built in a Seattle backyard, raised on cedar posts on account of their weather (http://thetanglednest.com/2010/02/our-urban-chicken-coop-plan/).

The photos of your dog intently watching the chickens are marvellous.

Kind regards,
Carolize

Hi Dani, it does have handles on either side so we can pick it up and move it around. It is a tractor!

Jane - Have you considered putting wheels on one end and a handle on the other - that way you can move the tractor round your garden and fertilize the whole area (as well as get rid of any pests / chicken weed lurking where you don't want them) :)

Hi Jane, I agree a trip to the Okavango Delta is magical and wondrous! I've just received your book for my bday. I am thrilled and relieved to see your 'jungle style'. As my beloved hubby is a true perfectionist, the only way for him is a perfectly ordered, structured veg garden where he is in control. I've always wrangled with my consience as my heart and soul want 'free jungle style' but to him it's just a mess! I feel guilty and a failure when my garden wants to run it's course. Ahh, now I know it's FINE to listen to nature and let the plants grow haphazardly and look a bit 'deurmekaar" and how I will enjoy it. Jungle garden here I come - Thanks Jane - I Love your Book!

Thank you for the inspirational talk held in Pretoria. Went straight home and made snail traps, although I must admit sharing my Castle Lite with the snails was a bit difficult. Bought your book for myself as a christmas gift and a week ago harvested my first potatoes...OMG...I don't normally eat starch...well thats almost all I ate for a week. DEVINE...Thanks again.

Hi Linda,

I will see when I get back home whether I am growing them or not! I am away and the seeds hadn't germinated yet before I left. They are seeds a friend brought back from Italy. They need a typical Mediterranean climate - hot dry summers and a cold winter. So if they have germinated, the next experiment is to see if they will cope with Joburg weather - as many Med plants do.
